ALL THIS DATA, NOW WHAT ?

As we continue to see manufacturing companies adopt and move forward with Industry 4.0 technologies, we focus on how do we best utilise all this acquired data and set about supporting Lean manufacturing. Although Lean or SOPs (Standard Operating Procedure) are not new, they have seen significant gains with digital solutions and the goal for OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) has made real headway in understanding real time conditions in the production process, giving a Top Floor to Shop Floor overview.

In a perfect world we would see all machinery having complete uniformity on the factory floor, for many companies this is unlikely to happen and with legacy equipment, different manufacturers and a number of control systems, it is critical for the MES (Manufacturing Execution System) to be in a position to evaluate the signals, data and make it usable.

There are some key building blocks needed in monitoring a production process and it belongs in the hands of specialists, who work in an advisory and consultative capacity before any system is installed.

  • Machine Data
  • Real Time Performance Analytics
  • Historical / Predictive Data
  • On-Prem / Cloud Storage
  • Planning / Scheduling
  • Global Plants
  • Track and Trace
  • Document Control
  • ERP Production to Finance
  • Energy Management

Some of the key interfaces required include CNC machinery, high speed lines and alignment with new or existing ERP systems. Siemens has an overview of its MES solution and is quite clear in the description – you can read it here What are MES solutions

Robotics, Automation, Machinery, High Speed Lines, move at a pace and it is good to see them support and add value to production and manufacturing. We depend on equipment even more in the work place, we should be more vigilant on monitoring uptime and costs, making fact based operational and strategic decisions, also this data and analysis give massive advantages in enabling real time monitoring and as importantly, the ability of intervention when things go wrong, highlighting the real value of collecting critical production data.
